Everyone knows food is universal and for Malaysia, it is the core of our culture! Learn how to cook an authentic South East Asian Dish with Chef Alou's Cooking and Market Tour.
Chef Alou will take you to a local Penang market to experience the local atmosphere and learn about the various food and tastes unique to Penang. She will also bring you to her favourite Chee Cheong Fun stall for breakfast.
You will then return with Alou to her private kitchen and receive a tailor-made cooking class, suitable for everyone of all ages. What's special about Alou's cooking class is that the menu is different each day of the week ranging from Laksa to Char Kway Teow, so everyone experiences something different!
For Alou, these classes are more than "a class" but a place to meet new people, share experiences and stories, and introduce the community to engage with Penang culture. She believes that that "It's your kitchen, so do as you please!". As long as you like it and is happy, she's happy!

If you stay in the Georgetown or Tanjung Bungah areas of Penang, I will either meet you at your hotel or arrange a “Grab” (our version of Uber) to pick you up 8:00 am and take you to the market. This where the fun begins.
Skip that hotel breakfast of yours! Today you will be eating some of Penang’s favourite breakfast foods. What a great way to start your day! How does a hot cup of Penang’s famous “kopi susu” sound? This local coffee pairs nicely with a Malaysian sweet coconut spread called “kya” on buttered toast or even a steaming plate of homemade noodles called “Chee Cheong Fun”. All local and all good eats!
Penang is known for its fresh produce. In our market, I will see much you recognize like apples, carrots, and different type of leafy greens. I will take this time to introduce you to some new favourite.
Have you ever seen a custard apple? How about rambutan? Have you ever seen a Jack Fruit? You will not only get a chance to see these amazing tropical delicacies but taste them as well.
Return to Alou's Kitchen
After your market tour, you will return with me to my private kitchen where you will be greeted with all the ingredients you need for your hands-on cooking class.
You will have your own station with a stove, utensils and of course your ingredients. I will introduce you to the menu set and go through the various elements and techniques you will be using. It is during this time when you will learn the secrets to local Penang flavours.
Now you get to eat what you've cooked!
As if learning how to prepare these dishes were not enough, now is the time when you get to eat what you’ve created!
We clear off the table, pull out the plates and sit down to a fantastic lunch of a local Penang favourite. From here, all you have to do is sit back, enjoy and spend an amazing time chatting. Trust me, time will fly past!
I will drop you off at your hotel and it was nice meeting you!
