“Orang Asli” or literally translated as original people is the Malaysian term used for the groups of people indigenous to Peninsular Malaysia and are the oldest inhabitants. There are 18 Orang Asli tribes that still exist, categorised under three main groups according to their different languages and customs i.e. Semang (or Negrito), generally confined to the northern portion of the Peninsular, Senoi, residing in the central region and Proto-Malay (or Aboriginal Malay), in the southern region.

This unique, CSR-based tour will lead you to the village of Batu 12, Gombak where Encik Raman bin Bah Tuin, a retired Semai tribe of Senoi group gentleman, is working together with his partner both independently and in close collaboration with local institutions of higher education on social responsibility programs to further develop and assist the local community. Here local single mothers will show you how to weave various handicrafts, with the opportunity of you giving it a try yourself, before you trek through the jungle whilst identifying the local flora and fauna.

Upon reaching the grounds of the Jungle School, you will learn to build a day-shelter using ‘bertam’ leaves collected from the jungle and learn the secrets of fire-starting using the wood you collected. Before lunch of rice, chicken, fish and vegetables all cooked in bamboo, test yourself at a blowpipe competition and a puzzle solving game known as ‘Jah re Noi’.

Before ending the tour and trekking back to civilisation, enjoy your traditionally cooked lunch with a special show for you by Encik Raman using his unique nose flute.

Raman, his friend and his two daughters ran a great trip. We hiked with his two daughters for about 45 minutes, and they pointed out various plants and herbs along the way. The pace was easy for us to follow. When we arrived they had set up the kitchen area and showed us how they were cooking our lunch. We helped to prepare the rice in the bamboo. They had also brought us Rambutan from their own trees and it was delicious. There was a slightly more difficult hike that my parents didn't to but my friend and I did. We went up higher and were taught basic survival techniques like how to lay a fire safely and make a torch and smoke signal. We also gathered leaves. We took them back down and all of us learnt how to weave them to make the roofs. We also wove our own bookmarks, ate a delicious lunch, and practiced using the blow pipe. The family were friendly, spoke good English and were happy to answer all of our questions.
