Learn the delicate skill of batik making and create your own imaginative designs in our Malaysian Batik Journal Class.
Batik is one of many traditional art forms rooted in Malaysia's rich history. The distinctive designs are made using a removable wax-resist method, before the fabric is dyed and the wax is removed. In this hands-on experience, you will be introduced to two different methods of batik making: canting (a technique using a pen-like tool to create free form patterns) and block patterns (using our special batik blocks to form intricate designs). Once you've learnt the techniques, put your skills to the test and design your own unique batik artwork which you can bring home at the end of the day!
Your participation in Batik Boutique's Batik Class does not only help in preserving the cultural art form, but also contributes to the livelihood of underprivileged women across Malaysia. Apart from bringing home a handmade souvenir, you are leaving something behind - the chance for our batik artisans to gain a sustainable income and skills.
Learn the basics of the blocking and canting method, then go wild with creativity!
Our artisan will share a brief history of batik and the story behind its social enterprise. After some demonstrations, you can try your hands at making your own designs through wither canting or blocking.
Our local expert will then help you mix your desire color combinations, so you can bring out your creativity. After the wax is removed - voila, you have your very own personalized batik product!
